Hotel in play for Newcastle’s Churchill House
Agent Knight Frank has been instructed to find a tenant to develop and operate a 40 to 50-bedroom hotel at the grade two-listed building, at the junction of Dean Street and Mosley Street.
The city centre building is surrounded by numerous bars, restaurants and shops and lies within easy reach of most of the city’s attractions.
The building was originally developed in the 1890s as a bank and more recently promoted as a multi-let office.
Ryan Lynn, partner at Knight Frank, said: “This is a unique opportunity to work with the current owners, an established property company in the North East, and have input at the start of the process into layout, facilities and design throughout, to create a new hotel experience in Newcastle upon Tyne, a city that is receiving a huge amount of investment and attracting visitors from around the world.
“Dating back to 1891, this Victorian building has an impressive facade with traditional features internally throughout – with the right operator in place, it could be the next talked about hotel in the North of England.”
A planning consent for the conversion is not yet in place, but Place North East understands that informal discussions with the city council have taken place.
One of the more obvious trends in Newcastle city centre over the last year has seen developers look to create aparthotels within historic buildings, generally in smaller, more confined footprints than Churchill House – examples include Panther Properties’ consented conversion of 36-40 Clayton Street, Belgravia’s 1 Old Eldon Square and a boutique hotel and brasserie being advanced at Metropolitan House in Collingwood Street.
