Next steps for Newcastle’s 620,000 sq ft AirLink
A major new freight and aviation-linked development could be on the way south of Newcastle International Airport, following a formal request for a scoping opinion submitted to the council.
The proposal, brought forward by Buccleuch and Newcastle International Airport and prepared by planning consultants DPP Planning, outlines an outline application for a phased industrial and logistics scheme on land known as AirLink in Woolsington, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Buccleuch Property will work alongside Argon Properties on the development, which would include large-scale industrial and warehousing facilities alongside associated infrastructure such as access roads, parking areas, and landscaping. It also proposes a replacement private passenger terminal and improvements to the existing access road, including widened footpaths.
The development would include space for cargo operators, freight forwarders, and ground handling services, with logistics units that allow freight to be loaded and unloaded directly between the aircraft and the warehouse.
Newcastle Airport measures just shy of 1,000 acres and handles a relatively modest amount of cargo: 6,000 tonnes in 2024.
Before a full planning application is submitted, the developers have asked the council to determine what environmental assessments are required.
The site lies immediately south of Newcastle International Airport, an area already closely associated with logistics and aviation uses.
If progressed, the scheme would significantly expand freight-handling and warehousing capacity in the airport’s wider development zone, reinforcing its role as a regional transport and distribution hub.
