Govt advances Leamside Line in NPR plans

The newly unveiled £45bn Northern Powerhouse Rail programme has confirmed development work on the long‑disused Leamside Line in the North East will be taken forward alongside upgrades to core NPR routes connecting Yorkshire and the North East.

The Leamside Line, a 21‑mile former railway corridor between Pelaw in Gateshead and Tursdale in County Durham, closed to passengers in 1964 and has been the subject of reopening proposals for decades.

In November, AECOM was appointed to conduct a feasibility study to assess both technical aspects and potential economic growth opportunities around reopening the disused rail line, long on the wish list of civic leaders.

Government statements indicate that NPR funding will support early planning and business case development for the route, which could provide new passenger services to communities including Ferryhill, Shincliffe, Belmont, West Rainton, and Penshaw, as well as strategic freight capacity.

Transport advocates have welcomed the inclusion of the Leamside development in NPR, noting that improved rail connectivity and integration with existing networks could generate broader economic benefits.

While no final decision has yet been made on the precise scope, timeline, or funding beyond initial development work, the Leamside Line’s progression into formal studies under the Northern Powerhouse Rail framework reflects renewed national and regional focus on long‑standing rail connectivity ambitions in the North East.

Kim McGuinness, Mayor of the North East said: “My region deserves major investment in transport and that’s what we’re delivering, ensuring Northern Powerhouse Rail services reach Newcastle, via Darlington and Durham.

“We will work with government on the proposed Leamside reopening, aiming to bring back rail to parts of County Durham for the first time in decades.”
