170 home Consett scheme tipped for approval

Persimmon’s plans for the land to the east of Knitsley Lane will be considered by Durham County Council this coming Friday, and have been recommended for approval.

Originally submitted in 2021, the number of houses has been reduced from an initially proposed 200 and will consist of a mix of two-, three-, four-, and five-bed bungalows, townhouses, and detached houses.

Set over 29-acres, the land was previously used for agricultural purposes and is close to a number of other approved development sites in the Consett area near Templetown, such as Miller Homes’ 288-home development on land north of Delves Lane, Consett, which was approved in 2023.

Outline permission has also been granted for a nearby mixed-use scheme comprising a community hospital, pharmacy, a residential care home, a gym and wellbeing centre, a hotel, a pub and micro-brewery, and a vets practice at land to the south of Puddlers Corner Roundabout, Genesis Way, Consett, also approved in 2023.

That scheme is being developed by Project Genesis, a joint venture between Durham County Council and Dysart Developments.

Project Genesis has also submitted plans for a site to the west of Knitsley Lane at Templetown in Consett, which is currently pending a decision on a proposed 129 home scheme.

Persimmon has designated 10% of the housing as affordable.

Sorry but I don’t want houses built where I live. They’re taking all of our green space from us and it’s a local dog walking areas. We have beautiful views and you’re going to ruin it. Stop this from happening please.

Consett hasn’t got the infrastructure for yet more housing. It hasn’t got the schools, the shops or the services. At what point does someone step in the investigate Project Genisis on the general public behalf as they obviously don’t have the best intentions for the people of Consett?
